Digital literacy divide
Stories about the exploding growth of podcasting bump into reports that the majority of American internet users don’t know what podcasting or RSS is. Such divergence suggests there is a growing digital literacy divide, separating casual users from innovators and early adopters of new media.
Geeks like myself are prone to forget that many internet users are unaware of the potential benefits of new media. Perhaps this is just one more illustration of the generational difference between the “technology natives” and the “technology immigrants”.
Online educator could view this divide as an opportunity, and develop online community programs to raise the literacy levels of their communities.
